Talka 2016

Once again, as tradition has it, we hosted Talka during Memorial Day Weekend. This year’s crew was a small but mighty bunch. Volunteers like these have kept our beloved facility in good repair for over thirty years, and this year was no different. The work is never ending, however, and each year I aim to strike a balance between our immediate needs and projects that improve the facility over the long term.

This year’s largest project was the rebuilding of Harijs deck, that recently collapsed. Before moving with his family to Hawaii, Lukas Petersons jumped in one last time to lead a team of seasoned Talka volunteers (Valdis Riekstins, Konrads Leitis, Krisjanis Pruzinskis & Edgars Graudins) on the project. In two days they built Harijs a beautiful new deck. I’m thrilled that these guys are the future of our camp, their hard work and dedication builds a bright future for us all.

Meanwhile, the pressure washers, mowers, and the log splitter buzzed non-stop all weekend. With Aldis Raisters again at the helm as Talka Director, I was able to focus on a few skilled tasks myself. All in all, we we were able to accomplish more than anticipated with fewer folks than usual. I’m always amazed at how much we can accomplish in such a short time. I cannot thank Aldis and the rest of our volunteers enough!

As our lives are get more and more complex and the demand for our time is unprecedented, I ask all of you to keep RKLIC in your mind. We are here to serve your needs for community, for a place to celebrate our traditions and culture and as your refuge in the woods. We can’t exist without you. The board of directors is there simply to fulfill your needs and to do that, we need your feedback. What do you want the future of RKLIC to be? Please call me anytime to share your ideas.
