In June, during the longest day and shortest night of the year, Latvians celebrate Līgo svētki or Jāņi. Ancient in origins, and arguably one of the most celebrated traditions, Jāņi sees Latvians flocking from the cities to the countryside to celebrate in the open air. Keeping with our mission, we follow in suit.

Jāņu tradīcijas
Jāņi Traditions

Ar Jāņiem ir saistītas daudzas tradīcijas. Piemēram, sievietes un arī vīrieši parasti valkā vainagus. Sieviešu vainagi ir vīti no ziediem un zālēm, bet vīriešu vainagi ir sieti no ozolu lapām. Mājas ir izpušķotas ar zariem un ziediem vai nātrēm, lai pasargātu māju un tās iemītniekus no ļaunuma.

Ugunij Jāņu laikā ir liela nozīme. Tā nodrošina gaismas pāreju no viena saules gada otrā. Tiek dedzināts vai nu ugunskurs, vai garas kārts galā uzvilkta darvas muca un ir svarīgi lai uguns degtu līdz saullēktam. Populāra ir lēkšana pār ugunskuru jo tā atbrīvo ļaudis no “visa nevajadzīgā”. Rokās saķērušies pāri lēc pār ugunskuru, lai uguns burvju spēks tos vienotu kopā. Ļaudis var iet gulēt tikai pēc saullēkta un pēc nomazgāšanās rīta rasā.

There are a great mani traditions associated with Jāņi. Women, as well as men, will typically wear various handmade wreaths. Women’s wreaths are typically made from various grasses and flowers, while men’s from oak leaves. Homes are often decorated with various branches and flowers, and nettles and thistles are attached to door frames to keep evil spirits away.

Fire also plays an important role in the celebration. Fire is burnt either in tall towers or in bonfires, and must be kept burning until the sunrise. Jumping over the bonfires rids people of “everything unnecessary,” while for couples, jumping over the fire together allows the flames to bind them together. Just as the fires must burn through the night, the people must celebrate until the dawn as well. Only after seeing the sunrise can people go to bed, but not before walking through the morning dew.

Tāpat kā latvieši Latvijā, arī mēs svinam Jāņus ar līdzīgām un svētām tradīcijām. Mēs pinam vainagus, kurinām ugunskurus, un svinam līdz rīta ausmai. Mums Kursā ir dejotāji, ķimeņu siers un garšīgs alus. Mēs vienmēr dziedam līdz rītausmai un, pēdējos gados, svinam Jāņus kopā ar igauņiem un lietuviešiem. Baltijas valstīm ir līdzīga vēsture un mēs to godinām ar draudzību. Vai Jāņi, Jaanipäev vai Joninės, mūsu tradīcijas ir līdzīgas. Lielākā atšķirība ir ar Igauņiem kuri Jāņos (Jaanipäev) šūpojas šūpolēs. Latvieši un lietuvieši šūpojas Lieldienās.

Many of the same traditions are observed during our celebrations: wreaths, bonfires, and celebrating until the sunrise. We have dance groups perform traditional folk dances, eat traditional cheese made with caraway seeds, and sing songs until the sunrise. Recently, we have begun celebrating with the local Estonian and Lithuanian communities as well. The Baltic countries share a tight friendship, and we honor that at Jāņi, Jaanipäev, or Joninės, depending on whether you are Latvian, Estonian, or Lithuanian. Many of the traditions observed for Jāņi between the three cultures is similar, although that is not always the case. For example, of the three, only Estonians have the tradition of swinging during Jaanipäev; Latvians and Lithuanians swing during their Easter celebrations.

EVENT RULES

Clean up after yourself and take all garbage to the dumpster behind the dining hall upon departure. It is expected that all facilities used will be cleaned or tidied up to the condition they were upon arrival, or better.
Attendees must follow all county burn ban regulations. Burn ban information and recreational fire laws and regulations are available on Mason county’s website.
No fireworks.
Dogs must be leashed at all times.
No smoking in any building or structure, and at least 25 feet away from doorways and open windows.

WAIVER OF LIABILITY AND ASSUMPTION OF RISK

Holder voluntarily assumes all risks, liability, and danger incidental to the ”Jāņi” (Event) at the West Coast Latvian Education Center June 21-22, 2025 for which this ticket is issued, whether occurring prior to, during or after the Event.  By accepting this ticket and participating in the Event, holder expressly releases the West Coast Latvian Education Center, Inc. (WCLEC), and its officers, agents and volunteers, from any and all claims arising from the Event or occurring on the WCLEC property.

The WCLEC is a not-for-profit Section 501(c)(3) organization. Donors may deduct contributions to this organization as provided in the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) code.
